4 Leading Reasons Seniors Experience Falls
Falls are the leading cause of serious, even life-threatening injuries among adults age 65 and older. From hip fractures to head trauma, the statistics are mouth drop worthy.
A fall that requires medical treatment in an emergency room happens every 11 seconds according to the National Council on Aging. It is also written that a senior loses their life every 19 minutes because of injuries following a fall. For seniors, their loved ones, and all of us at Keeping Good Company, these are frightening numbers.
One of the biggest things we focus on at Keeping Good Company Senior Care at Home is the safety of our clients and fall prevention. It all starts with understanding the common causes.
- Sedentary Lifestyle:
- A senior who is a fall risk might combat this by staying close to the couch and avoid walking at all costs. But in fact, keeping active protects their strength, balance and endurance. The Caregivers at KGC can help by staying close by and encourage activity.
- Environment:
- Seniors often live in the same house for many decades. Their home may not meet their needs as it once did. Ramps or other helpful devices may need to be installed. Poor lighting or an unsafe bathroom are just a few dangers that present themselves. Caregivers can help monitor bathing safety.
- Medication Issues:
- Another cause of falls among seniors is problems with medication. Taking medication improperly can influence strength, balance and even cause one to be lightheaded. Taking one’s medication properly is just as much for safety as anything else on this list. KGC Caregivers can provide medication reminders so it is always known that the correct amount was taken. Our Caregivers diligently document each task that is done during a shift.
- Poor Nutrition:
- It isn’t uncommon for seniors, especially those who live alone or those who can no longer drive to suffer from poor nutrition. A lack of easy transportation to the grocery store to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein is one potential reason. A health condition such as arthritis can also make it difficult to prepare healthy meals. When an older adult’s diet is poor, they are at an increased risk for falling. Two of the most popular services we offer is transportation and meal preparation!
